Well, hello there! I’m Teri.
I am what you would call a food nerd. I don’t think I’m sophisticated enough to be called a “gourmet” or any of the other fancy terms used for people who love food. I get excited about new recipes the way people get excited about the Super Bowl. (Yes, I have screamed in victory when the creme brûlée has achieved that delicate perfection of caramelized sugar and have done stupid dances to celebrate the achievement of a perfectly tender steak!) My kids and my husband have learned to look the other way when I moonwalk across floor with chocolate sauce dripping from my chin, grinning like an idiot.
The kitchen is my playground and in it, I am an ecstatic child on summer break. I love the feeling of butter smooshed between my fingers. I love the smell of warm sugar and vanilla. I enjoy the challenge of forcing oil and vinegar to cohabit to make the perfect dressing for a salad. I live for the first beautifully presented bite of something new and delicious. And if I get to do it all with my kids…EVEN BETTER!
Mostly, I enjoy the fruits of my labors. There is simply nothing more gratifying than taking on a new culinary challenge, sitting down to share it with those I love, and hearing nothing but “Mmmmmmmmmmm”.
So, even though almost every last dish in my house is dirty when I’m done playing and I’ve welcomed more than a few guests into my home with a sink full of evidence…for me, it’s all worth it!
WHAT KIND OF FOOD WILL YOU COOK AND PUBLISH?
Pretty much everything. My taste in food is as eclectic as my taste in music. Anything that tastes good (and I’m willing to try anything once) is fair game for my kitchen. And while I don’t strictly adhere to any one type of diet, I do tend to cook most of my food from scratch…usually from wholesome organic foods. We also eat dessert. I believe in moderation in all things…and life without a good cookie or scoop of ice-cream every now and then just isn’t a good life for me.
WHERE DID YOU LEARN TO COOK?
Mostly, I learned to cook from my mother, grandmother, great-grandmother…my aunts and sisters. Basically, it’s a family thing. But aside from that, I spend my spare time reading cook-books (nerd, remember?) and learning new techniques and recipes. I am a scientist at heart. And while sitting in a lab with test tubes and beakers sounds incredibly boring to me, watching the process of baking powder lift a biscuit or garlic turn in small degrees from pungent to sweet is utterly fascinating to me.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BLOG?
Honestly. I didn’t plan to. There are a million and a half blogs about food out there. I didn’t really think my voice needed to be added to the chaos. However, I started a yearly digital cookbook email back in college (which is more years ago than I care to admit) that I sent to friends with all of my new recipes. Some of those friends would contact me before the year mark to see if I had found a good recipe for whatever it was they were craving. Finally, one of them just asked if I would put my favorite recipes in blog format so they could see my current favorites. So…I did. And I’m so glad I did! Cooking, writing, and photographing the food has been such a fun journey for my kids and me.
